1. According to Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Technology Market Research, in the April-June period, Micromax has sold the highest number of handsets in the country with 16.6 share of the overall handset market. It is followed by Samsung and Nokia.
2. Centre proposes to set up a Telecom Finance Corporation (TFC), public sector unit under the administrative control of Department of Telecom in the 12th Five Year Plan period (2012-17). It will be registered as a non-banking and non-deposit infrastructure finance company.
3.The prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Awards for year 2014was announced for six awardees on 31 July 2014. The awardees are Hu Shuli - a Chinese investigative journalist, Saur Marlina Manurung- recognised for improving Indonesia's forest people, Omara Khan Masoudi - for protecting Afghanistan cultural heritage, The Citizens Foundation - NGO in Pakistan and Randy Halasan for Emergent Leadership from the Philippines. The Ramon Magsaysay Award is Asia’s highest honour and is widely regarded as the region’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
4. England topped the medal table at 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. It was followed by Australia and Canada. India stood at the fifth position in the rankings with total 64 medals (15 Gold, 30 silver and 19 Bronze). The 21st Commonwealth Games will be held in Gold Coast in Australia.
5. The Israeli government has accepted an Egyptian cease—fire proposal to stop a monthlong war against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. A long term truce will be made between Palestinians and Israeli government in Egypt in next three days.
6. Honda Motors is setting up the world's largest scooter plant in Gujarat to roll out 12 lakh units annually and achieve leadership position in the Indian two-wheeler market.
