1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold bilateral meetings with all SAARC leaders, except Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the summit. Prime Minister Modi is expected to include a tough message on fighting terror in his speech at the inaugural session.
2. Raghuram Rajan said that the Reserve Bank of India can give banks more flexibility to restructure distressed loans to steer funding towards cash-strapped infrastructure projects. However, the central bank would oppose any delay by banks to recognise bad loans.
3. RBI has issued final norms for payment banks and small finance banks. As per the guidelines, those seeking to set up these two new categories of banks would need minimum Rs 100 crore of capital. Existing NBFCs and micro finance lenders would be allowed to set up small finance banks. state-run entities would be eligible to apply for payment banks.
4. Legendary Kathak dancer Sitara Devi known as “Empress of dance” died at the age of 94. She was honoured with the Legends of India Lifetime Achievement Award 2011 for her contribution to the classical dance genre for over six decades.
5. United Nations (UN) Women announced the appointment of Indian tennis superstar and youth icon, Sania Mirza, as its Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia. She became the first South Asian woman to be appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador

1. Author Bilal Tanweer’s maiden novel The Scatter Here is Too Great has bagged the 2014 Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize. The award carries a cash component of Rs. 2 lakh.
2. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval has been appointed Special Representative for talks with China on the boundary issue. As of now, 17 rounds of talks have taken place between the Special Representatives of the two countries to explore a solution to the boundary issue.
3. Three global organisations - the World Toilet Organisation (WTO), WASTE and the Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation and Health (FINISH) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to share best practices in the sanitation sector and help millions of Indians gain access to basic sanitation facilities.
4. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) Chairman T. S. Vijayan has said, Jan Bima Yojana on the lines of Jan Dhan Yojana can be introduced to increase awareness of insurance. There had to be a concerted effort between industry, regulator and the government to spread awareness of insurance.
5. U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has resigned following the first major cabinet change after President Barack Obama’s Democrats were routed in mid-term elections.
