1. Government will set up Consumer Care Centres ( Grahak Suvidha Kendras) in cities in the country to provide a range of services to consumers. Centres will provide counselling to consumers for redressal of their grievances and assist them in registering their complaints in the appropriate consumer fora.

2. India-UK bilateral relations reached a new high in 2014 as British Premier David Cameron accorded top priority to India in UK's foreign policy and a series of high-level visits taking place to foster closer political and economic relations.

3. Government may impose anti-dumping duty on Chinese USB Flash Drives to protect domestic players which has suffered material loss from below-cost shipments from China. Anti-dumping duty is recommended by the Commerce Ministry and the Finance Ministry imposes it.

4. The think tank on intellectual property rights has proposed exclusive protection for small inventions through a new law on utility models. It is also known as 'petty patents' and 'innovation patents' which is granted exclusive rights to the owner to prevent others from commercially using protected innovation for a limited period of time.

5. Union Government observed 25 December 2014 as Good Governance Day. The day was observed to celebrate the 90th birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

CURRENT AFFAIRS 25th Dec., 2014

1. Government is considering a proposal which caps economy air fares to check airlines from charging ‘exorbitant’ fares or unleashing predatory pricing. The proposal comes in the wake of SpiceJet episode which gave low-fare offers to beat competition and then facing cash crunch.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 102nd Indian Science Congress on January 3 at the University of Mumbai. Delegates including seven Nobel laureates and four Nobel-equivalent prize winning scientists are expected to attend the congress.

3. Government has fully endorsed the apex court’s guidelines giving High Courts the power to decide on applications seeking permission to withdraw life support in the best interest of the patient. Supreme Court judgment had legalised passive euthanasia under exceptional circumstances three years before.

4. 29th National Consumers Right Day was observed across India on 24 December 2014. The day provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of the consumer movement and the need to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities.

5. Union Ministry of Home Affairs has set up G. P. Mathur committee to look into the issue of implementation of the payment of enhanced compensation for person killed during the 1984 anti Sikh riots. The committee will also look into various grievances relating to the 1984 riots.
