1. India plans to barter surplus sugar for pulses from abroad: The Centre is planning to barter surplus sugar in the country for pulses that are being imported at high prices and the Ministries of External Affairs and Commerce and Industry are working together on the proposal.


2. Jaitley calls for efficient expenditure management : Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on 9th August said that it is important for a country like India to have an efficient expenditure management system. Otherwise, it could risk going the way of Greece, he said referring to that country’s ongoing debt crisis.


3. India on top in exporting beef : India retains its top spot as the world’s largest exporter of beef, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and has extended its lead over the next highest exporter, Brazil.


4. Over 1 lakh rare books, 2,500 manuscripts set to be digitised : The Maharashtra government has flagged off a programme to digitise over 1,00,000 books and 2,500 manuscripts, some of which date back to the 12th century, at the 211-year-old Asiatic Society library in Mumbai.
