★ Senior IRS officer Najib Shah has been appointed as Chairman of Central Board of Excise and
Customs (CBEC), apex body on Indirect Taxes.
★ The appointment of Najib Shah as the Chairman of CBEC was approved by The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shah will have tenure till March 11, 2017, when he attains the age of superannuation 60 years.
★ Shah was serving as acting Chairman of the board after retirement of Kaushal Srivastava in July 2015. Shah had also been Director General of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) .
★ Shah, is a 1979 batch officer of Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise), has been working as Member in the board since May this year.
About Central Board of Excise and Customs :-
★ The Customs & Central Excise department was established in the year 1855 by the then British Governor General of India, to administer customs laws in India and collection of import duties / land revenue. It is one of the oldest government departments of India.
★ The Central Board of Excise and Custom is the nodal national agency responsible for administering Customs, Central Excise, Service Tax & Narcotics in India. Customs and Excise department comes under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
The CBEC consists of a chairperson and maximum of six members. At present, Shah's wife Neerja, VS Krishnan, Vanaja N Sarna, Ram Tirath and Ananya Ray are working as other members.
