1. 37% rural homes in Tamil Nadu use LPG, highest in country: Tamil Nadu has the most number of rural households in the country using LPG for cooking. More than 37.2% of the total rural households had LPG connection in 2011-12.

2. Differences over offset clause delay Rafale deal: India and France are negotiating an agreement for direct purchase of 36 Rafale fighters. However, the agreement had been delayed over the issue of offsets. France insists that the offset clause would raise the cost and delay deliveries. The offset clause applies for deals estimated at over Rs. 300 crore and as per the offset clause companies have to invest 30 per cent of the value of the contract back in the country.

3. Myanmar declares national emergency: Myanmar’s President Thein Sein headed to devastated rural regions where a state of emergency was declared after deadly monsoon rains displaced tens of thousands of people.

4. HDFC Bank’s new initiative: HDFC Bank has launched ‘Dhanchayat’, an educational film to raise awareness on the dangers of borrowing money from unorganised sources. This film has been launched under the aegis of Swachh Banking, the bank’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

5. Navayuga Engineering(NECL) to develop two eastern ports: Navayuga Engineering Company Limited (NECL), the promoters of Krishnapatnam Port, is in the process of developing ports at Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Astaranga in Puri district at a cost of Rs.12,000 crore.

6. Next to Greece: It is Puerto Rico to default on debts: Puerto Rico is expected to default on $58 million of debt on 2nd August. The US commonwealth country is increasingly coming under pressure financially as it attempt to restructure $72 billion of debt.
