1. J&K to get a huge development package: The Union government is finalising a massive “development package” of as much as Rs. 70,000 crore, for Jammu & Kashmir. The funds will be spent over the next five years on projects to be identified by the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Government.
2. Killer seaweed invades coral-rich Mannar region: Kappaphycus alvarezi, an exotic seaweed, has invaded the northeast parts of the Mulli islet in Kilakarai coast in the Gulf of Mannar region where the coral genus used to be dominant, according to Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SDMRI).
3. Modi pitches for early implementation of TAPI project: Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched for early implementation of the $ 10 billion TAPI gas pipeline project during his talks with Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov. Terming TAPI (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) project as a significant initiative in relationship between the two countries, Mr. Modi has conveyed to Mr. Berdymukhammedov of that multiple options including the possibility of land-sea route through Iran for the pipeline should be explored.
4. India’s population crosses 127-crore mark: On the World Population Day on 11th July, India recorded a population of 127crores which is growing at a rate of 1.6 per cent a year, and could make the country the most populous in the world by 2050.
5. Serena wins Wimbledon women’s singles: Serena Williams won her 6th Wimbledon title on 11th July. At 33, she has become the oldest player to win a Wimbledon singles title, surpassing Navratilova.
