19. “Healing”
detected in Antarctic ozone hole: The scientists said that in September 2015
the hole was around 4 million sq km smaller than it was in the year 2000 - an
area roughly the size of India. The gains have been credited to the long term
phasing out of ozone-destroying chemicals. The study also sheds new light on
the role of volcanoes in making the problem worse. The natural production and
destruction of ozone in the stratosphere balances itself out over long time,
meaning that historically there has been a constant level to protect the
Earth by blocking out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Its absence
increases the chances of skin cancer, cataract damage, and harm to humans,
animals and plants. British scientists first noticed a dramatic thinning of
ozone in the stratosphere some 10 kilometres above Antarctica in the mid
1980s. In 1986, US researcher Susan Solomon showed that ozone was being
destroyed by the presence of molecules containing chlorine and bromine that
came from chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

22. RBI wants
ARCs to pay cash to banks in exchange of bad loans: The Reserve Bank of India
(RBI) has said that asset reconstruction companies should pay cash for
stressed loans purchased from banks instead of issuing security receipt to
banks to arrive at true sale of the asset. Speaking at a seminar organised by
Assocham, Ajit Chowdhary, chief general manager at the RBI said, "Cash
sale needs to be encouraged instead of security receipts (SR)." The RBI
has mandated ARCs are to pay at least 15% in cash and the balance can be paid
as security receipts that are redeemed over five to eight years. A number of
banks such as Bank of India, Canara Bank and Bank of Baroda have said that
they would prefer only cash in exchange of bad loans. ARCs are of the view
that reserve price set by banks does not reflect of the value of assets. The
gross bad loans in the books of banks have touched Rs 6 lakh crore and this
does not include write off loans. As of now there are 16 ARCs operational
ARCs but only a handful of them are active.

25. First
squadron of LCA Tejas inducted into Indian Air Force: After a wait of over
three decades, the IAF has finally got its hands on the first squadron of
home-grown Light Combat Aircraft Tejas next with the induction of two
aircrafts into the force in Bengaluru. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited handed
over the first two Tejas aircrafts to IAF which will make up the Flying
Daggers 45, the name of the first squadron of the LCA. Indias first
indigenous LCA, which is all set to replace the MiG-21 series, is a result of
several years of design and development work by Aeronautical Development
Agency (ADA) and HAL. The home-grown aircraft is equipped with a quadruplex
digital fly-by-wire flight control system to ease handling by the pilot. Due
to its small size and the extensive usage of carbon composits, its radar
cross section is very less compared to other aircrafts like MiG-29, F-16.
Tejas incorporates a distinctive glass cockpit in which information is
displayed real-time to the pilot. Tejas also has open architecture software
for avionics, which can be updated by DRDO as and when required.
